I loved this book. The author, a medical school professor, goes into immense detail about surgical procedures, which is fascinating but sometimes gets a bit long. The story and the characters, the setting in Ethiopia, and the interweaving of characters’ lives is spectacular. I’d recommend this book without qualm (except to squeamish folks who don’t want to read medical details!).

I HAD to read it since I’m on an African literature frenzied quest. This was an amazing story. Character development is among the best I’ve ever read.
