The world is a-twitter about the death of Cecil the Lion.
I think this post by Nicky Campbell captures why this majestic lion’s death matters. He says, “This has lifted the lid and it goes way beyond the beautiful majestic Cecil. ”

Yes, there are children in poverty in the world, and there are other issues that demand our attention if we do pay attention in the world. I can name offhand three organizations that I’d like to support in South Africa, just because I’ve been there, seen the grand work that they’re doing. I have friends who know programs in Tanzania that we should support. The world needs each of us to make it a better place.
That brings me back to Cecil. Why does he matter? Because, as this author points out, it’s indicative of a mindset of some humans: Greed and power matter far more than empathy and caring about human life or animal life. It boils down to that.
Last night, after a spectacular show at Studio Six–“The Best of Hank and Rita, A Bar Room Operetta,” performed by Ann Fee and Joe Tougas, which will be the subject of my next post, and if you haven’t seen it, GET TICKETS! It sold out in Mankato, but it IS WORTH THE DRIVE to New Ulm or Bryant Lake Bowl or Duluth–After the show, I had a long conversation with Scott Fee and Ryan Sturgis of True Facade Pictures, and his partner who happens to be my former student Mike (last name escapes me at this moment, so sorry).
We talked about how the world seems to be divided into two groups: those who care about all other living beings, human and animal–and those who have next to no regard for any other being if it stands in the way of what they want. That leads to greed, power, every war ever waged, poaching animals like Cecil, hunting for the sport of the kill, poverty, racism, classism….the list of every ism is included.
Think about it. I know this is an over-simplification of how the world works, but it’s true at some level. Think about it. On which side of the divide are you?
