On my Newbery Medal blitz during sabbatical (reading as many of them as I can that I haven’t already read), I find myself slightly disappointed with some of the books deemed “the best of the best” in Children’s Literature for the year. This book, short, and not a novel, lived up to every expectation, however.

In fact, I listened to it in audio form. I would recommend that format to EVERYONE if you’re the least interested in the Middle Ages, or if you teach that period to any age student.

I only listen to unabridged books on CD–my primary criterion. I was surprised that this entire unabridged book took up only two disks, but quality? Spectacular! It’s a series of seventeen monologues by seventeen different young people living in the Middle Ages. Various walks of life, various personalities: all Good_Masters_Sweet_Ladieslogue for each student. Brilliant!

Performed on the audio version by professional actors, complete with medieval music, this is a listening JOY! I loved it.
